DailyNyan ("we," "our," or "us") is a private, non-commercial website published by an individual in Japan, and we are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you visit our website. We follow the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) and other applicable Japanese laws as a matter of principle, and we hold ourselves to the standards described below whether or not they are legally required of a project like this one.
DailyNyan is operated from Japan and written primarily for readers interested in Japan. We do not market to, or specifically target, readers in any other country, and we do not tailor the site to the law or the language of any particular country outside Japan. The site is nonetheless reachable from anywhere, and if you are reading it from outside Japan we still apply this policy to your information. Section 5 explains how we treat readers outside Japan.
We collect only the minimum information needed to operate and improve the site:
We use collected information to: deliver and improve the website; remember your preferences (language and theme); respond to your inquiries when you email us; understand which content resonates with readers, in aggregate; and comply with legal obligations under Japanese law. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties, and we do not use your information for advertising. We do not use your information for profiling or automated decision-making.
Our systems are kept separate. Correspondence you send us lives in our email and never enters the website; analytics is aggregate and cookieless; and feedback is stored with no identifier. We do not combine correspondence with analytics or feedback data, and we have no way to do so.
We set one cookie, and only to remember a language you have effectively chosen. If you switch the language using the language selector, we store your choice in a cookie called "NEXT_LOCALE" so the site opens in that language next time. The only other time it is set is when your browser's own language differs from the language of the page you asked for β in that case we record the page's language as your preference, so you are not sent back to the other language on your next visit. It is strictly necessary to remember a preference you set yourself, it is not shared with anyone, and it expires when you close your browser.
Your appearance preference (light, dark, or follow your system setting) is saved in your browser's own local storage rather than a cookie, so it stays on your device and is never sent to us with your requests.
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and no tracking technology of any kind. Analytics is cookieless: it writes nothing to your browser and stores no identifier that survives the day. Article feedback also sets no cookie. The one cookie above is not used for analytics or tracking and is never shared with any third party β it only ever remembers a language preference, so there is nothing for a cookie consent banner to ask you about, which is why you will not see one.
You can clear either preference at any time through your browser settings β deleting stored site data removes the language cookie, and clearing local storage removes the appearance setting. The site will then fall back to detecting your language and your system appearance.

If you happen to read the site from outside Japan, we still apply this policy to your information, and the practices it describes do not change based on where you are reading from.
Because we do not target readers outside Japan, laws that apply only to businesses established in, or directing services to, other regions generally do not apply to us. We will nonetheless act in good faith on any privacy request we receive, wherever it comes from. To make one, use the contact details in Section 10.
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including TLS encryption in transit and restricted access to our systems. Access to any stored information is limited to the site operator. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. If a breach ever affected information you had given us, we would notify you and, where the law requires it, the relevant authorities.
DailyNyan is a private project published by an individual in Japan, so the obligations the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) places on business operators do not apply to us. We describe the following anyway, because we would rather meet those standards than argue about whether we must.
If we hold personal data about you, you may ask us to disclose it, correct it if it is inaccurate, suspend its use or delete it, and tell you whether we have provided it to any third party. You may also ask about any transfer of your data outside Japan. Contact us using the details in Section 10. We will confirm who you are before acting, and respond within a reasonable time.
Because we store very little personal data, in many cases we may hold nothing that can be linked back to you β and where that is so, we will say so rather than guess. Feedback in particular is stored without any identifier, so we usually cannot locate a particular person's feedback in order to retrieve or delete it. That is a deliberate design choice, and it means feedback cannot be used to identify you.
Our website is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable laws. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
